PRE-ORDER: The Women Who Built Bath (by Jane Duffus)

£15.00

Pre-order now: This title will be released on 9th September, 2026

Inside this book you will find the previously untold stories of 200 incredible women from Bath’s history. They were all women who helped to shape Bath into the extraordinary city that it is today. A few of them you will know… but most of them will be new names to you.

You can expect to find 26 suffragists, six artists, four doctors, two pioneering police officers and one big-hearted chicken in here… plus many more besides. Such as the sisters who enjoyed wild swimming into their 70s, the woman who founded a community of almshouses for single women, the doctor who travelled to her patients by horse so as not to be late, and the homeowner who made her voice heard by sunbathing in a scandalously yellow bikini.

These women come from all walks of life and all parts of the city, spanning laundresses and workhouse inmates to theatre revolutionaries and city councillors. Every woman featured in these pages has made her mark on this city and deserves her moment in the sun.

Praise for previous books in The Women Who… series:

Jane Duffus introduces us to a glorious and eclectic set of women. This is a wonderful reminder of the texture of women’s lives and their influence in every sphere – something historical accounts often forget.
— Helen Pankhurst, great-granddaughter of Emmeline Pankhurst
I always look forward to a new book by Jane Duffus. Her detailed research uncovers the stories missed and sometimes ignored by others. And the books are always so wonderfully readable.
— Andrew Kelly, author and festival director
The reading of these tales is as compelling as a good detective story.
— Baroness Thangam Debbonaire, politician

About the Author

Jane Duffus qualified as a journalist in 2001 and has worked as a journalist and editor for numerous best-selling national magazines and publishers. The Women Who Built Bristol: Volume Three is her seventh book, and Jane has edited several books for other authors. After relocating from London to Bristol in 2008, Jane founded the award-winning What The Frock! Comedy project in 2012 to challenge an industry that knowingly overlooks women’s talent. In addition, she continues to work as a freelance writer, editor and public speaker, and has spoken at events ranging from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to a Berlin arts centre and everything in between. Jane takes a break from all of the above by running ridiculously long distances for fun.
