Bristol Women at War Exhibition

Bristol Women at War, a free exhibition at Bristol Cathedral, examines the types of war work performed by women during WW1 and charts the shift in the workplace as women took on jobs traditionally performed by men.

The exhibition examines the women taking leading and influential roles in organisations like the Bristol Inquiry Bureau and the Red Cross Society, and tells the stories of often unsung ‘sheroes’ including the women who kept families running whilst husbands, sons and brothers were away.

Our latest book: Harry Dolman – the millionaire inventor who became “Mr Bristol City” was launched at Ashton Gate Stadium with around 150 people attending. Among them were current Bristol City football club management, former players, people who worked with Harry Dolman at his business Brecknell, Dolman and Rogers and members of the Dolman family. Marina Dolman OBE signed copies of the books along with authors Martin Powell and Clive Burlton and stories of Harry’s life and times were told by many who knew him. Memorabilia, including a propeller from the plane Harry built in his own living room and the trademark hat he wore to matches were on display. The book has been selling fast.

Bristol Books publication: “Louise Brown: My Life As The Word’s First Test-Tube Baby” proved hugely popular at the American Society of Reproductive Medicine Scientific Congress and Expo in San Antonio, Texas.

Hundreds of people queued to meet Louise and purchase signed books as the event was held close to the 40th anniversary of her conception in a petri dish, after her parents travelled from Bristol to Oldham to under-go the world-changing treatment.
